CUSTOM TRADING CARDS FOR HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Those Friday night lights are shining bright, and we’re right in the middle of Homecoming season. If you play high school football, now is a great time to make your own football cards! Use our custom trading card designer to commemorate your season. Snap those highlights for the front of your card, and load up the back of your card with your own stats. Score your first touchdown? Break a school record? Share your personal achievements on the back of your cards, too!

Make Your Own Football Cards

Football may be the most popular high school sport in the U.S. From big tackles to one-handed touchdown grabs, student athletes and their parents love to capture and share great moments from their football season. Our cards are professionally printed at high digital resolution on real trading card stock. Your cards can feature your team’s logo as well as your team’s colors. We’ve even included an autograph section on the front of the cards! At 20 cards per pack, they are great for sharing with family and trading with teammates. You won’t have to wait very long to get your cards in your hands, either. Your cards will typically print and ship 2-3 weeks after you place your order.

STUDENT ATHLETES, PARENTS — ANYONE CAN MAKE FOOTBALL CARDS!

It’s easy to create football cards with us. Our new “Individuals” custom trading card design tool allows just about anyone to make their own football cards. Parents love designing trading cards of their kids to share with family and friends, and student athletes love getting creative with their own cards. Just set up an account, and set the card template with custom color and optional logo. Then, upload a photo to the front and fill out the stats for the back. That’s it! (Read our tutorial for more details.)

FOOTBALL CARDS FOR THE WHOLE TEAM, COMPLETE WITH STATS ON THE BACK

If your football team is interested in creating custom cards, we’ve got you covered. From our “Team” tool, your coach sets the team’s card template and invites the players to make their own cards. The players then upload their own photo to the front and fill out stats for the back. It’s just that easy! The awesome thing about our cards? We save your stats for up to five years. That means you won’t have to refill the same numbers each time you make a new card for the same team! Remember, coach. You can make your own card, too!

Check out our handy tutorial guide video at the bottom of this post for more information on how to create football cards from our “Team” tool. Click the “Get Started” button below to begin creating your own custom trading cards!

Make your own basketball cards!

PARENTS — TRY OUR “INDIVIDUALS” CUSTOM TRADING CARD DESIGNER

Since we began Varsity Trading Cards, our custom trading card designer was focused solely on teams. We’ve listened to your feedback, and we are proud to announce a new tool — our “Individuals” custom trading card designer. Now, parents can create custom trading cards of their high school student athletes!

While we still offer our original “Team” designer, our “Individuals” custom trading card designer makes it possible to easily create custom trading cards for just one player. We offer the same fun features with our new “Individuals” tool, which includes logos, stats, and more! Furthermore, just like the “Team” designer, you can create individual cards from your desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone.

HOW TO USE OUR NEW “INDIVIDUALS” CUSTOM TRADING CARD DESIGNER

It’s easy to use our custom trading card designer. The very first thing you’ll need to do is Get Started. From this post, simply choose Get Started from the menu. From there, you will be provided with two options—Team or Individuals. For this tutorial, you will select Individuals.

Custom Trading Card Designer — Get Started
The “Get Started” page as seen on an iPhone.

When you select “Individuals” from the Get Started page, you will be taken to a registration form, just like the one pictured below. All fields on this form are required. PLEASE NOTE: the Player First Name and Player Last Name will be associated with the registered account. That name will appear on the trading cards and shipping labels. If you do not want your cards shipped to the player, you can change your shipping details before you check out.

Individuals Custom Trading Card Designer—Registration Form
The “Individuals” registration form as seen on a desktop browser

LOGO AND COLOR
After you have registered, you will be asked to log in. After doing so, you will immediately be taken to your dashboard. You will notice a prompt directing you to pick a color to be used on your trading card. Following the prompt, you can immediately pick a color, or you can choose to upload a logo. If you choose to upload a logo instead of using our custom color picker, you will be able to pick your card color directly from your logo. PLEASE NOTE: you must have sufficient rights to use any logos on your custom trading cards.

Custom Trading Card Designer — Logo Upload and Color Picker
Make sure to click the green “Update” button to add your logo and color setting to your card!

Once your logo has been uploaded, click “Team Dashboard” in the menu bar. From there, you may be prompted to choose a stat type to appear on the back of your card. This will happen for sports like Football, Baseball, and Softball. Those sports have different types of stats that can be used. Other sports will only have one stat type and will be automatically set. Once a stat type has been chosen by you or has been automatically set, your Team Dashboard page will inform you that you can now create your card!

STATS AND BIO
Now that you’ve set your card’s stat type, it’s time to fill out those stats. To do this, click “My Stats” in the menu. From there, you will be taken to the Player Stats page. On this page, you can enter personal information (such as height, weight, jersey number, and a short bio), as well as yearly statistics. Some stats calculate and populate for you! TIP: stats are not required—you can complete your custom trading card without them.

CARD DESIGNER
Now comes the fun part! After you’ve decided whether to add stats, click on “Card Designer” in the menu. Our custom trading card designer is easy to use, but it is very important to read and understand the instructions on the Card Designer page. Our designer lets you move, resize, and crop your image. Once you’ve set your image into the card designer just the way you like it, you’ll first need to click the checkbox directly above the card designer. This confirms that you have read and understood the instructions.

Next, two buttons will appear. If you want to save your card design, you must click the Save Front Card Design button first. After your card has been saved, you will be prompted to proceed to the back of the card. To do so, simply click the Review Back Of Card button. Here, you will be able to see how the stats you entered look on the back of your card. If you are not satisfied with the back of the card, you can return to your Player Stats page to make changes, and then return without the need to re-save the front of the card.

Once you’re happy with the card back, click the checkbox directly above the card back to confirm you have read and understood the instructions. Doing so will make two new buttons appear. To save, click Save Back Card Design.

ORDER YOUR CARDS
Now that both the front and back of your card have been saved, you will be prompted to return to your dashboard. Once there, you will see your team information, your color and logo, as well as preview images of the front and back of your card. Perhaps most importantly, you’ll see a prompt informing you that your card is now ready for purchase! When ready, click the Checkout button to proceed.

After clicking the Checkout button, you will be taken to your Order Details. Here, you can change the quantity of packs you’d like to order, enter a coupon code, change shipping details, and pay for your order. IMPORTANT: remember, the player name on the card is associated with your account. This is the name that will be used to ship your cards. You may change the shipping name on this page by clicking the Edit Shipping Address button.

Before They Were Trading Card Stars: Kris Bryant

By: Christopher, Founder & Owner
March 28, 2017

SOPHOMORE SENSATION SUPERSTAR ON THE FIELD AND ON TRADING CARDS

Kris Bryant, Autograph, Baseball Card, Trading Cards
Ivan Lovegren of The Breaks proudly displays his Kris Bryant autographed baseball card.

If you haven’t heard the name Kris Bryant before, you’re about to be introduced to perhaps the most recognizable new name in baseball and trading cards since Bryce Harper. (If you don’t know who Bryce Harper is, you might have to wait until we do an article about him.) In high school, he played (and even pitched) for the Bonanza Bengals in Las Vegas, Nevada. As you might have guessed, his talents did not lead him to the mound. What he did at the plate, on the other hand, made impressive waves.

In his Sophomore year in high school, Bryant hit home runs in six consecutive games[1]. He finished out his high school playing career with a .447 batting average[2]. In his Junior year at Bonanza, he had a ridiculous 1.045 slugging percentage. Who does that? Kristopher “Sparkles” Lee Bryant from Las Vegas, that’s who.

That kind of hitting and his imposing 6′ 5″ 200 lb. frame helped get him selected in the 18th round of the 2010 MLB Draft—right out of high school! He didn’t sign, however, and chose to continue his education (and playing dominating the game of baseball) with the University of San Diego. While there, he was named West Coast Conference co-player of the year as a Freshman, was selected by USA Baseball’s national collegiate team the summer of his Sophomore year, and was named College Baseball News National Player of the Year as a Junior[3].

FROM HIGH SCHOOL PHENOM TO TRADING CARD STAR

Kris was drafted in 2013 with the second overall pick and made his professional debut on April 17, 2015. Coming off his Sophomore season in the bigs, he’s already a two-time All-Star and was awarded Rookie of the Year honors. In 2016, he helped lead his team to a World Series championship and was named league MVP. Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages—this is one impressive kid.

What may be more impressive is just what he’s done to help reinvigorate the trading card industry and hobby. Since his first professional cards were produced and distributed, Bryant has been one of the most sought after subjects in the hobby. Sure, if you look hard enough, you can find knock-off non-Varsity Trading Cards versions of custom trading cards from his high school days. His autograph cards continue to be in high demand, and his regular cards (what those in the industry refer to as “base cards”) are enough to make kids so happy that they cry. Seriously. Check out this video below and tell me that doesn’t just warm your heart like a fresh bagel.

Know what this tells me? This tells me that trading cards are important to both adults and kids. Hey, I used to collect baseball cards when I was a kid, and as an adult I still do! It’s very rare, though, that a player comes around that reminds you just how awesome trading cards can be. Twenty years from now, I bet that kid still feels the same way about that same Kris Bryant card.

Make your own basketball cards!

CUSTOMIZE YOUR BASKETBALL CARD BACKS

Your card fronts may get noticed first, but your basketball card backs will be unforgettable. When you make your own trading cards, don’t forget about the backs! We take great care in making sure that your cards can tell the whole story. From basic items to the smallest details, we help you capture an ongoing snapshot of you as a basketball player.

The front of your cards will naturally be the first thing people will look at. That’s why we made sure that your coach can include your team’s logo and colors. We also give you a nice area on the front so you can autograph your cards. While the card fronts may give a good first impression, the card backs will get most of the attention. Here, we’ll show you exactly what goes into making your basketball card backs amazing.

YOUR STATS, YOUR BIO, YOUR BASKETBALL CARD BACKS

Your basketball card backs aren’t just customized, they’re personalized. You can add as much or as little detail as our system will allow. Did I mention that our system saves your stats? That’s right! That means that when you order new cards from the same team, you won’t have to fill out the same information again. Now, let’s take a look at how to customize your basketball card backs.

Firstly, your coach sets the card template. For the backs, your coach will set the school name, the school location, the team colors, and each player’s name. Your coach will then invite you to create your own trading cards with the team. Once you have logged into the team, you will be able to enter as much information as you like.

Customize your basketball card backs

When you enter the Player Stats portion of the website, you will be able to enter personal information. All of the information entered here will appear on different areas of your card backs. The Biography section is a great place to highlight important or memorable moments from your season. TIP: when entering your position, it’s best to use your position’s abbreviation. This is to ensure that there is enough room on the back of the card to display your position. You’ll notice that we used “Point Guard” in the example above. You can use “PG” instead.

When you’ve finished with the Player Profile portion, you can then move onto the yearly stats. You can fill in any and all years available. You’ll see on the Player Stats page that the stats abbreviations correlate to the same stats abbreviations on your basketball card backs.

Customize your basketball card backs

Remember, you can fill out as much or as little information as you like. One line you won’t have to fill out, though, is the Total. Our system automatically does the math and adds that information onto the card!

If you’re ready to make your own basketball cards with us, tell your coach to create an account and set up your team. Then, to create your card, just upload your photo, fill in your stats as shown in this article, and have your coach approve your card. Individual Custom Trading Cards — Keep Them Protected!

By: Christopher, Founder & Owner
March 7, 2017

KEEP YOUR INDIVIDUAL CUSTOM TRADING CARDS SAFE

You’ve made custom trading cards for yourself and your team. Now it’s time to store and protect your individual custom trading cards to keep them safe and looking great! Speaking from experience as a decades-long collector, protecting cards is a no-brainer. Unprotected cards can damage easily, while protected cards can last a lifetime. Not only that, protecting your cards is both easy and affordable!

You should consider a few things when you think about protecting your individual custom trading cards. How many cards do you want to protect? What level of protection do you want for your custom trading cards? How much are you willing to spend? Once you answer these questions, it will be easier to determine your protection needs.

You should also consider what can happen to your unprotected trading cards. No unprotected trading card is safe from damage. Just by simply holding your card, you subject it to oils and residue. You also risk damaging the edges and corners. It’s also very difficult to prevent accidental scratches and creases from mishandled cards. Your cards can even fade if exposed to sunlight. Don’t worry, though. We have a solution for that, too!

3 WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR INDIVIDUAL CUSTOM TRADING CARDS

individual custom trading cards, trading card protection, penny sleeves, toploaders, magnetic holders, BCWPENNY SLEEVES: This simple protection device gets its nickname from how affordable it is. Otherwise known as a “soft” or “standard” sleeve, the penny sleeve is typically made of synthetic materials such as polypropylene. These sleeves are also often acid free which helps to keep the printed ink intact. Available in packs of 100, they can sometimes be found for less than 50¢ per pack. They are typically the first line of defense against damage and are often paired with other devices.

TOPLOADERS: While penny sleeves are soft, these individual custom trading card protectors are much more rigid. They also come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. The standard 3×4 version is perfect for our cards. Standard cards with penny sleeves fit perfectly and look great in toploaders. You can expect to pay a couple of bucks for a pack of 25.

MAGNETIC CARD HOLDERS: While the rigid material of toploaders will keep your cards plenty safe, these holders go a few steps further in protecting your individual custom trading cards. Firstly, these card holders completely encapsulate your card. The magnetic snaps help ensure that your holder keeps your card inside. Secondly, they include recessed corners to keep your cards safe from dings and rounding. Additionally, many of these holders are UV-resistant, while penny sleeves and toploaders are not. This means you can display your card in direct light without worry of fading. Much like toploaders, these holders come in many sizes. Our cards fit perfectly in the standard “35-Pt” holders. You can expect to pay about a buck for standard-sized holders.

DESIGN YOUR CARDS, PROTECT YOUR CARDS

If you take the time to design custom trading cards with us, there are many options for you to keep your cards safe and looking great. As you can see by this list, it’s easy and affordable to protect your cards. Whether you trade your cards with your friends or put them on display, we hope you’ll consider any of these three ways to protect your individual custom trading cards.

Before They Were Trading Card Stars: Dak Prescott

By: Christopher, Founder & Owner
February 13, 2017

ROOKIE’S VALUE ON THE RISE

Dak Prescott, Autograph Card, Football Card, Trading Cards
Trading card collector @BrettsCards shows off his Dak Prescott autograph card.

Sometimes the misfortunes of some lead to great opportunities for others. That’s exactly what happened for Dak Prescott. Before he became a household name in professional and college football, Rayne Dakota Prescott was a virtual unknown. Unless you lived in and around Haughton, Louisiana, Dak Prescott was likely not on your radar. He created his own opportunities in his early years there and capitalized. If not for that, the misfortunes of one particular individual might have lead to a great opportunity for someone else altogether.

The Haughton Buccaneers already had a couple of standout Prescotts on their team. Dak’s brothers, Tad and Jace, helped cultivate the star he is today. Playing full tackle football with the older boys may have toughened him while also earning their respect. His older brothers might be better athletes, but Dak seems to have the “it” factor.

Prescott’s leadership and drive led to a District 1-4A Championship in 2009. The following year, he impressed a Mississippi State University scout during another District Championship game while playing with a torn MCL.[1] In his senior year, Dak would go on to pass for nearly 3000 yards and would rush for nearly 1000 yards.[2]

In Haughton, Dak was often impressive yet humble. Despite this, many prospective colleges would pass him by. It was the scout from MSU, offensive line coach John Hevesy, who recognized Prescott’s “it” factor.

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO COLLEGE STANDOUT

Dak’s first big opportunity came in 2013. MSU starting quarterback, Tyler Russell, suffered a concussion. Prescott, then a backup, would then take over as starter. He would help lead the Bulldogs to a Liberty Bowl victory that year[3] while earning that game’s MVP award. In 2014, Prescott would take MSU to their first ever #1 ranking while leading his team to the Orange Bowl. He would also garner many accolades during that season, including being named 2014 SEC Offensive Player of the Week on three occasions. Prescott would also go on to both earn the Conerly Trophy and be named First-Team All-SEC in 2014 and 2015[4]. Not to be outdone by his athletic skill, he would also excel in academics. Prescott did, in fact, earn a spot on the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll three consecutive years.

The list of accomplishments by Dak Prescott in his college years alone is extensive. In fact, he currently holds a total of 38 records at MSU. One could draw the conclusion that his success at MSU would boil down to two things; opportunity and “it.” Without those factors, Dak may still be a humble, relatively unknown name.

STARS ALIGNED FOR DAK PRESCOTT

Prescott would somehow manage to fly under the radar for much of the pro football draft in 2016. His accomplishments at Haughton and Mississippi did not catch the eye of teams early on. However, the Dallas Cowboys would select Dak in the fourth round to develop him as a backup to starting quarterback Tony Romo. Battling for the backup position, Prescott would not waste his opportunities.  During a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, Tony Romo would suffer a significant injury. Due to his impressive preseason play and Romo’s unfortunate injury, Dak Prescott was named starting quarterback to begin the Cowboys’ 2016 season[5].

Under Dak Prescott, the Cowboys would finish the season 13-3 and would become NFC East Champions. They would also secure home field advantage for the playoffs. The tandem of Prescott and first round draft pick, Ezekiel Elliot, seemed nearly unstoppable. Dallas quickly became favorites to win the NFC Championship and Super Bowl LI. In his rookie season, Dak would earn a spot in the 2016 Pro Bowl and on the PFWA All-Rookie Team. Prescott would also win the 2016 Pepsi Rookie of the Year award, while the NFL would honor him with the Offensive Rookie of the Year.

DAK PRESCOTT, TRADING CARD STAR

It’s not yet clear what the future holds for Dak Prescott. If his past is any indication, one could assume many will continue to underestimate him and he will continue to shine. One thing is clear, however. His trading cards are hot right now. That was not the case to start the football trading card collecting season. Many collectors would instead chase Ezekiel Elliot over Prescott. However, Dak’s success on the field would quickly translate to his popularity on cardboard[6].

Prescott’s ability to take over the team and lead them to the playoffs currently make his trading cards some of the most valuable[7]. His humble beginnings make his rise in trading card popularity all the more impressive. Prescott’s “it” factor and ability to capitalize on opportunity, however, make his popularity in trading cards seem inevitable.
